Filming on location is notoriously stressful. Sometimes everything goes to plan and the session can be wrapped up quickly, but the majority of the time film crews have to overcome problem after problem before they can get the shots they want.

Here are 4 of the most common problems facing film crews on location, and a few tips on how they can be solved:

  1. A reliable power supply

Getting a reliable source of power in inaccessible or remote locations, particularly in bad weather, can be very difficult. What you need is a company such as The Powerline which specialises in temporary power, and has vast experience in powering outside film sets in very hard-to-reach locations and in nightmare conditions.

  1. Unpredictable weather

Not only is a certain type of weather required for continuity in some cases, it is also necessary for uninterrupted shooting. There isn’t much you can do if the weather turns, but you can ensure that you have adequate shelter, heat and light for the cast and crew to wait out a sudden rainstorm.

  1. Poor light

Depending on the time of year and the time of day, poor light is a cameraman’s nemesis. It can be overcome with artificial lighting powered by a reliable generator, but you can also adjust filming schedules (i.e. starting earlier, being realistic about the time it will take to complete filming) to compensate.

  1. Unwanted cast members

Animals and spectators getting into shot can be frustrating, but it can be reduced by sealing off the set and by employing some extra security.
